Prophylaxis (Teeth Cleaning)
Prophylaxis like the word signifies, is a dental procedure performed to prevent gingivitis (gum inflammation) and control the progression of periodontal disease by thoroughly cleaning the teeth and gums.
The benefits of a dental prophylaxis include:
Plaque Removal – Calculus (tartar) and plaque buildup, above and below the gum line, can result in periodontal disease. Even with proper home care including brushing and flossing, it is impossible to remove all debris, bacteria, and deposits from gum pockets. The skill and experience of a dentist or hygienist using specialized dental instruments and equipment is necessary to remove potentially damaging deposits off your teeth. Scheduled Recare appointments will help maintain your gums healthy and free of inflammation.
A Healthier and Younger Looking Smile – Stained and yellowed teeth can dramatically decrease the aesthetics of a smile. Prophylaxis is an effective treatment to rid the teeth of unsightly stains.
Fresher Breath – Bad breath ( halitosis) can be indicative of periodontal disease. A combination of rotting food particles (possibly below the gum line) and inflammed gums results in bad breath. Recare appointments at our office can prevent halitosis by keeping your teeth clean and your gums healthy. Professional removal of plaque, calculus, and bacteria from your teeth can noticeably improve the quality of your breath and reduce chances of infection.
Prophylaxis can be performed at our office or by the office of the periodontist. The frequency of Recare appointments depends on the individual needs of each patient. Often, Recare appointments alternate between our office and the office of the periodontist or referring general dentist. The damage to the bone and gums that is caused by periodontal disease may in some instances be irreversible. With scheduled Recare appointments, we can control the progression of periodontal disease.
